Luc Besson’s back catalogue of action films is prolific with the best and most loved being Leon aka The Professional (in the US) but now he’s turning his attention to horror. Reports have it that Luc Besson’s Dracula is his next.
is to direct an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s’ “Dracula,” telling the story of 15th century Prince Vladimir who cursed God following the death of his beloved wife and is turned into a vampire. Later, in 19th century London, he discovers his wife’s doppelgänger and dooms himself by pursuing her. Buyers familiar with Besson’s script tell us there are some epic and potentially spectacular set pieces.
And better still rumour has it that Christoph Waltz is to play the lead role. Caleb Landry-Jones, who stars in Besson’s latest film ‘Dogman’ a revenge thriller that grossed a disappointing $3 million in France despite getting a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival and yet reviews called is a “ludicrous howler” and an “irredeemably boneheaded thriller.” (Vartiety).
It is rumoured that Luc Besson’s Dracula will be his comeback film after his company EuropaCorp was sold in 2020 and no longer has an operational role in the company but serves as artistic director under five-year exclusive deal renewable for another two years. Besson’s career in recent years has been dogged by the bruising financial experience of mega-budget Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets and sexual misconduct allegations, including by an actress from that production. Besson steadfastly denied any wrongdoing and last year the filmmaker was cleared of all charges in that case by France’s equivalent of the U.S. Supreme Court.
