Of all the wrestlers that have turned to acting John Cena is one of the most successful able to do both comedy and action and the ‘Freelance’ trailer combines both. Cena has had a busy summer after appearing in the blockbuster hit Barbie and voicing Rocksteady in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and also stars in Vacation Friends 2 that is out in the US shortly and the Freelance trailer trailer looks set to continue his popularity
ex-special forces operative Mason Pettis (Cena) who is stuck in a dead-end desk job when he reluctantly takes on a freelance gig to provide private security for disgraced journalist Claire Wellington (Brie). Wellington, trying to make a comeback, has landed a major interview with the ruthless and impeccably dressed dictator Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba) of the country of Pandoña. When a military coup breaks out just as she’s about to get the scoop of a lifetime, the unlikely trio must figure out how to survive the jungle AND each other in order to make it out alive.
Morel directs from a script by Jacob Lentz (Jimmy Kimmel Live!), and the supporting cast includes Juan Pablo Raba, Alice Eve, Marton Csokas ( fantastic as the villainous russian in The Equalizer) and Christian Slater. While Cena rose to prominence in wrestling while Brie also has a connection to the sport having earned two Golden Globe nominations for her lead role on Netflix’s GLOW. The film was shot in Columbia last year for a modest $40m so should turn a profit pretty quickly
Freelance is released on 6th October 2023 in the US with a UK release date to be confirmed
